Barranca del Cobre
The train journey through the Copper Canyon, from Los Mochis on the Mexican Pacific coast to the high plateau of the Sierra Madre to Chihuahua,
is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary train journeys in the world. The landscape of the canyon system of the Barranca del Cobre is a lot larger
and just as spectacular as the Grand Canyon in the USA, but not half as well known. Rivers have carved stately canyons into the rocks of the
Sierra Madre Occidental. It is a very remote, lonely mountain region - created by the violence of nature over millions of years. The mysterious
treasure of the Sierra Madre has never been found, or is the sheer beauty of the Copper Canyon the real treasure?
From goods traffic to tourist trains

More About
More About Barranca del Cobre
During the construction of the railway line through largely inaccessible areas, the focus of interest was on transporting goods across
Mexico and opening up rich mine deposits. It took almost a century to complete the Chihuahua al Pacifico Railway.
With its 86 tunnels and 37 bridges, it is considered a technical masterpiece worldwide. Today, the 400-mile Copper Canyon Railway
is a major tourist attraction in Mexico. And yet the train ride on the train, affectionately known as the Chepe, has remained an
insider tip because of the relative isolation in the north of the country.
Do you want to start our holiday tour now? With the Chepe Express through the copper gorge

After the flat rolling in at the coastal plain of Los Mochis, the most spectacular section of the railway begins at El Fuerte.
The Chepe Express torments itself in adventurous hairpin bends over 2000 meters up into the Sierra Madre.
The wild gorge system of the Barranca del Cobre is overcome by means of numerous bridges and tunnels,
with breathtaking views down into the depths of the gorges of the Rio Urique and Rio Batopilas.
The train makes a short stop in the town of Divisadero to to be able to take at least one smooth photo.
On the high plateau of the Sierra Madre you can see fantastic waterfalls and quiet mountain lakes,
extensive pine forests and bizarre rock formations. Terminus is either Creel or the regional capital of Chihuahua.
I will describe how the train journey through the Barranca del Cobre could go and show you the outstanding attractions and sights along
the way. Plus lots of travel information and travel tips for an unforgettable trip through northern Mexico.
As you are used to from us, we are happy to tailor the tour to your needs, like all tours.
Thus, the tours are available in every price range, even for the smallest purse, this is our Habibi World Travel & Tour service

➢ What do I have to expect ??
Los Mochis (sea level)
Los Mochis (place of the turtles) is not far from the Pacific coast of Mexico.
It is an important industrial port on the Pacific. From a tourist point of view,
there is little to see and do here... except that the famous train journey through
the Copper Gorge starts here. In the port of Topolobampo the ferries go to La Paz
on the Baja California.
The departure is usually at 8 am from Los Mochis. Alternatively, travel the day before to El Fuerte,
which is about an hour and a half by road east of Los Mochis. On the railway line up to here you will
not miss any dramatic scenery.

➢ El Fuerte (200 m)
We will take care of your wishes
The first stop - You are traveling alone and would like an experienced personal guide on this tour... Ask us and we will take care of your wishes. :
The first stop of the train journey is El Fuerte. Or you start the train journey here, as do many organized tour groups. The advantage is obvious, you
have time to see the picturesque small town and don't have to get up too early on the day of departure, the Chepe Express leaves at around 10:20 a.m.
Sounds good, doesn't it?
El Fuerte means "The Fort" which the early settlers built to protect them from unwanted invaders. The city was an important center of
agriculture in colonial times and a temporary storage for silver, gold and other metals from the mines in the canyons. For a few years,
El Fuerte was even the capital of the then unified states of Sinaloa and Sonora.
The original fortress has long since disappeared, you don't even know exactly where it stood. A replica stands on a hill between
the central Plaza de Armas and the Rio Fuerte River. The climb is definitely worth it, especially at sunset. If you have the time
and desire, you can visit the Cerro de la Máscara, where you can admire petroglyphs of the native Indians. We also met people who
took a boat trip on the Rio Fuerte. Inquire locally whether this offer is still available.

➢ Bahuichivo und Cerocahui (1600 m)
Bahuichivo is actually not a city
Bahuichivo is actually not a city at all, but just a seemingly godforsaken train station.
The place never existed before the railway line was built. Only 10 km from this stop is Cerocahui, a
small village with less than 1000 inhabitants. The charming place lies in a valley full of apple orchards.
We stayed at the small, rustic Hotel Misión, which also organized the transfer from the train station in Bahuichivo.
The hotel can also help you with excursions in the area: horseback riding or hiking through breathtaking scenery to
the waterfall of Cerocahui and the viewpoint on Cerro Gallegos. From here you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Barranca de
Urique, the deepest gorge in the western system of the Sierra Madre.
Deep down in the gorge is the village of Urique, where silver was once mined. Just getting there is a real adventure,
see our travel report about visiting the Urique Canyon.

➢ Posada Barrancas, Areponapuchi (2200 m)
Chepe Express continues, over several bridges and through numerous tunnels:
The journey with the Chepe Express continues, over several bridges and through numerous tunnels. It
climbs up to 2200 m to the Posada Barrancas train station, not far from the village of Areponapuchi. The
tourist train does not stop here, but just 5 km further on is the Divisadero stop, where you can certainly get off and return by road.
Areponapuchi is just a cluster of houses, a tiny church and a few lodgings. You have the choice between
family cabañas and exclusive hotels. The most expensive and luxurious hotel is at the front of the canyon: Hotel Mirador Posada Barrancas.
The Hotel Mirador clings to the rock face like an eagle's nest, towers high above the gorge and seems to have been carved out of
the natural stone itself. The rooms have a very special style and design, influenced by the indigenous Tarahumara culture.
The balcony enchants with a spectacular view over the Copper Canyon. Even if you're not staying at the Hotel Mirador Posada
Barrancas, you can enjoy a drink on the terrace, grossly overpriced, but you're happy to pay a few pesos
more for the magnificent view and the cozy atmosphere.

➢ El Divisadero (2200 m)
Don't miss this unique tour here, when will you have the opportunity again???
A stone's throw away is the Divisadero train, a train station without a village. The train stops here
for 20 to 30 minutes so that those passing through also have a chance to capture the fascinating gorge
landscape with their cameras at the vantage point. From here you can also see Urique Canyon and Tararecua Canyon.
Tarahumara Indians sell their handicrafts, wood carvings, baskets and dolls at the souvenir market by the train station. Plus culinary treats.
But why be satisfied with the short time window? Divisadero and Posada Barrancas are the most famous stations
on the railway line and offer the most spectacular viewpoints of the Copper Canyon. Build in one, even better
two nights at one of the two locations. The Hotel Divisadero Barrancas is located right next to the train station of
Divisadero, with rural charm and a wonderful view from your own balcony or terrace. The hotel also organizes horseback
riding or hiking tours. Of course, you can also walk along the edge of the gorge on your own or follow one of the hiking trails.

➢ Parque de Aventura Barrancas del Cobre (2200 m)
We'll quickly introduce you to 4 of the many activities here:
Not without noise and opposition, the theme park opened in 2010 to become one of the region's premier attractions.
On the one hand it hopes to attract more tourists and promises jobs, but on the other hand it is also a considerable
intrusion and spoils the majestic natural wonder.
In the Barrancas del Cobre Adventure Park you can float over the gorge in a cable car, experience the
longest zip rider in the world, complete a circuit with 7 zip lines and two suspension bridges, master a via ferrata or
explore the edge of the gorge on a rope park . You pay for all activities individually, for some the return trip with the
cable car is already included. Originally even a roller coaster over the abyss was planned. If need be,
construction will follow in the next expansion phase.

The most popular attraction in Parque de Aventura is the cable car (teléferico), a convenient way to discover the gorges
from a different angle. Up to 60 people can be transported in one cabin. The approximately 3 km long route leads to the »Mesa de
Bacajipare« viewpoint. Here an impressive panoramic view of the three gorges Barranca del Cobre, Barranca Tararecua and Barranca
Urique opens up. After you've had your fill, you can return with the same ticket.

➢ Creel (2300 m)
The small town and outdoor paradise of Creel
The small town and outdoor paradise of Creel makes a worthwhile stop on the Copper Canyon train journey.
The town is located in the magnificent western Sierra Madre, southwest of the capital Chihuahua. Mother
Nature has blessed this place with gigantic rock formations, romantic lakes, inviting thermal
springs, endless forests and fascinating waterfalls. On a day trip you can visit the
Cascada Basaseachi, the highest waterfall in Mexico . Or how about a trip to Batopilas,
the old silver mining town deep down in the canyon?

➢ Chihuahua (1400 m)
The train travels another 260 km across the Sierra Tarahumara
The landscape is getting flatter now. The train travels another 260 km across the Sierra Tarahumara
plateau to Chihuahua City, the terminus of the train journey if you are traveling on the Chepe Regional.
Since the tourist train Chepe Express unfortunately only goes to Creel, you have to rely on a bus transfer.
Like many Mexican cities, Chihuahua has a historic center with pretty colonial architecture that is well worth
seeing. Pancho Villa, the famous guerrilla, lived here. You can visit his house, which is now a museum about
the Mexican Revolution. The priest Miguel Hidalgo, one of the conspirators in the fight for Mexican independence,
was executed here after being captured by Spanish soldiers.

➢ How long does the train journey take?
The train journey with the Chepe Express takes
around 10 hours.
The train journey with the Chepe Express takes
around 10 hours. In theory, you can cover the 653-kilometer train route in one long day.
But then you would miss a lot, the gorge landscape of the Barrancas del Cobre is one of
the most breathtaking natural attractions in Mexico. It's definitely worth getting out of the car on the way and getting to know the area with excursions.
We recommend planning at least 1 week for the route from Los Mochis to
Chihuahua. 7-10 days are even better, see our suggested itinerary below.
